After being unceremoniously booted out of the Velvet Underground for being too weird (and also foreign), and replaced by possible war-criminal Doug Yule, John Cale set about making his own records. Funnily enough, for the most part he avoided the unmarketable, feedback-laden drone-fests that got him kicked out of the VU in the first place. Instead he made what appeared to be lovely pop songs, tastefully arranged for piano and guitar (with the occasional freakout for old time’s sake). Then one day Lou Reed made Metal Machine Music, and Cale got his head back in the game.
